About this coin
The most recognised gold coin in the US: one troy ounce of gold, guaranteed by the US government for weight and purity, and IRA-eligible. Contains 1 troy oz of fine gold (22k (.9167)). Legal tender with a face value of $50 (USD), which is symbolic — its value is the metal. Year of our choice; condition brilliant uncirculated unless stated. Packaging: Individual capsule or mint tube of 20.
The American Gold Eagle is the most widely traded gold coin in the United States, and the one most dealers will buy back without question.
Each coin holds one full troy ounce of fine gold, alloyed with silver and copper to 22 karat, so the coin weighs a little over an ounce in total. That alloy is what makes it hard-wearing: Eagles handle being counted, stacked and shipped far better than soft pure gold.
The obverse carries Augustus Saint-Gaudens' Liberty, taken from the 1907 double eagle. Weight and purity are guaranteed by the United States government, which is why it is the default choice for a first gold purchase and for IRA accounts.
We ship the year we have in stock, brilliant uncirculated, in a capsule or a mint tube of 20.
Questions
How is the price of the Gold Eagle 1 oz calculated?
It contains 1 troy oz of fine gold. At the current spot price of $4,190.28/oz that metal is worth $4,190.28; our premium for one unit is $230.46 (5.5%), paying by bank transfer. The price updates with spot until you lock it at checkout for 10 minutes.
Why is the card price higher?
Card networks charge us a fee on every card payment. Our list price is the card price; paying by bank transfer (ACH) or wire saves you 4%.
Is there a discount for buying more?
Yes — the per-unit price drops at 10 units. The table beside the price shows each break.
Can I spend it?
It is legal tender with a face value of $50 (USD), but the face value is symbolic. Its worth is its gold content.
Why does the coin weigh more than an ounce?
It contains one full troy ounce of fine gold plus silver and copper alloy, so the whole coin weighs about 1.0909 troy ounces. You pay for the gold content.
Can I hold this in an IRA?
Generally eligible for a precious metals IRA, though your custodian has the final say on what it accepts.
How will it be shipped?
Fully insured, in plain packaging with no reference to what's inside, and a signature is required on delivery. Tracking is emailed when it ships.
