About this coin
The original one-ounce bullion coin, first struck in 1967. Hard-wearing 22k alloy and a low premium. Contains 1 troy oz of fine gold (22k (.9167)). Legal tender, which is symbolic — its value is the metal. Year of our choice; condition brilliant uncirculated unless stated. Packaging: Individual capsule or tube.
The Krugerrand started the modern bullion coin market. South Africa struck the first ones in 1967 to give ordinary buyers a way to own gold, and for years it was the most traded gold coin in the world.
Each coin contains one troy ounce of fine gold in a 22 karat alloy with copper, which gives it its warm reddish colour and a hardness that survives handling. The whole coin weighs about 1.0909 troy ounces.
The Krugerrand carries no face value. It is legal tender in South Africa by proclamation, with its worth taken as the gold it contains.
Premiums are usually among the lowest for a one-ounce coin, which is the main reason people buy it. We ship the year we have in stock, in a capsule or a tube.
Questions
How is the price of the Krugerrand 1 oz calculated?
It contains 1 troy oz of fine gold. At the current spot price of $4,190.28/oz that metal is worth $4,190.28; our premium for one unit is $167.61 (4.0%), paying by bank transfer. The price updates with spot until you lock it at checkout for 10 minutes.
Why is the card price higher?
Card networks charge us a fee on every card payment. Our list price is the card price; paying by bank transfer (ACH) or wire saves you 4%.
Is there a discount for buying more?
Yes — the per-unit price drops at 10 units. The table beside the price shows each break.
Can I spend it?
It is legal tender, but the face value is symbolic. Its worth is its gold content.
Why is there no face value?
It was made as a bullion coin, not for spending. It is legal tender in South Africa, but its value is the gold it holds rather than a stamped denomination.
Can I hold this in an IRA?
No. IRA rules require gold of at least .995 fineness, with American Gold Eagles the one exception, so a 22k Krugerrand doesn't qualify.
How will it be shipped?
Fully insured, in plain packaging with no reference to what's inside, and a signature is required on delivery. Tracking is emailed when it ships.
