Buying platinum

Platinum is rarer than gold and priced mostly by industry rather than by investors, so it can trade below gold for years and then move sharply on a supply shock or an emissions rule change.

That makes it a different sort of holding. The market is thinner: fewer dealers keep platinum in stock, spreads between buy and sell prices are wider, and you will usually sell to a dealer rather than a private buyer. Premiums are higher than gold for the same reason.

We stock the American Platinum Eagle, the Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf, both .9995 fine, and one-ounce bars from accredited refiners at the lowest premium. All of them are eligible for a precious metals IRA, though your custodian decides what it accepts.

Buying platinum: the short guide

Why buy platinum?

Platinum is rarer than gold and mostly used in industry, so its price can move differently from gold and silver. Bars carry the lowest premium; the Platinum Eagle is IRA-eligible.
