Buying gold
Gold is the metal most people buy first, and the one with the deepest resale market. A one-ounce coin or bar is the standard unit: easy to price, easy to store, and accepted by any dealer in the world.
What you pay is the live spot price of the metal plus a premium, and the premium is where dealers differ. Sovereign coins like the American Eagle, the Canadian Maple Leaf and the Britannia carry a higher premium than bars because a government mint stands behind the weight and purity. Bars from LBMA-accredited refiners cost less per ounce and sell back just as easily to a dealer. Fractional coins, a quarter or a tenth of an ounce, cost the most per ounce but let you sell part of a holding at a time.
Every gold product here shows its spot value and its premium separately, so the only number you need to compare with another dealer is the premium.

Coins or bars — which is better value?
Bars usually carry a lower premium per ounce, so more of your money goes into metal. Sovereign coins (Eagles, Maples, Krugerrands) cost a little more but are recognised everywhere and easy to sell in small amounts.
What does “premium over spot” mean?
Spot is the market price of one troy ounce of raw metal. The premium covers minting, distribution, insurance and our margin. We show both on every product so you can compare dealers like for like.
Is 22k gold (Eagles, Krugerrands) worth less?
No. A 1 oz Gold Eagle contains one full troy ounce of gold; the small amount of alloy is added on top for durability. You pay for, and own, the same gold as a 24k coin.
