About this coin
The Royal Mint's flagship bullion coin, in pure gold since 2013, with latent-image and surface-animation security features. Contains 1 troy oz of fine gold (.9999). Legal tender with a face value of £100 (GBP), which is symbolic — its value is the metal. Year of our choice; condition brilliant uncirculated unless stated. Packaging: Individual capsule or tube of 10.
The Britannia is the Royal Mint's flagship bullion coin, struck since 1987 and in .9999 fine gold since 2013.
Philip Nathan's standing Britannia, with trident and shield, has appeared on the reverse from the start. From 2021 the Royal Mint added four security features to the design, including a latent image that changes as the coin is tilted and a surface-animation field, making it one of the most heavily protected bullion coins made.
Each coin holds one troy ounce of fine gold with a £100 face value. For UK buyers Britannias are free of capital gains tax as legal tender; that exemption is a UK rule and does not apply to US buyers.
We ship the year we have in stock, in a capsule or a tube of 10.
Questions
How is the price of the Gold Britannia 1 oz calculated?
It contains 1 troy oz of fine gold. At the current spot price of $4,190.28/oz that metal is worth $4,190.28; our premium for one unit is $184.37 (4.4%), paying by bank transfer. The price updates with spot until you lock it at checkout for 10 minutes.
Why is the card price higher?
Card networks charge us a fee on every card payment. Our list price is the card price; paying by bank transfer (ACH) or wire saves you 4%.
Is there a discount for buying more?
Yes — the per-unit price drops at 10 units. The table beside the price shows each break.
Can I spend it?
It is legal tender with a face value of £100 (GBP), but the face value is symbolic. Its worth is its gold content.
What are the security features?
Recent Britannias combine a latent image, surface animation, micro-text and tincture lines. All four are easy to check by eye and hard to reproduce.
Can I hold this in an IRA?
Generally eligible for a precious metals IRA, though your custodian has the final say on what it accepts.
How will it be shipped?
Fully insured, in plain packaging with no reference to what's inside, and a signature is required on delivery. Tracking is emailed when it ships.
