The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is usually the lowest-premium way to buy a sovereign-minted one-ounce gold coin, which is why it is a staple for buyers who care mainly about ounces per dollar.
The Royal Canadian Mint struck the first Maple Leafs in 1979 and moved to .9999 purity in 1982. Recent coins carry radial lines machined across the field and a micro-engraved maple leaf with the year inside it, both of which are hard to fake and quick to check.
Pure gold is soft, so handle the coin by its edges and leave it in its capsule or tube. Milk spots and small marks are normal on bullion coins and don't affect the gold content or its value.
