About this coin

The American Gold Buffalo was the United States Mint's first 24 karat gold coin, introduced in 2006 for buyers who wanted pure gold with a US government guarantee.
Each coin is one troy ounce of .9999 fine gold, so unlike the Eagle the coin's whole weight is gold. The design is James Earle Fraser's Buffalo nickel of 1913: a Native American profile on the obverse and an American bison on the reverse, widely considered one of the finest pieces of American coin design.
Pure gold is softer than the Eagle's alloy, so Buffaloes mark more easily and are best left in their capsules.
