About this coin

The only platinum bullion coin issued by the US Mint, and IRA-eligible. Contains 1 troy oz of fine platinum (.9995). Legal tender with a face value of $100 (USD), which is symbolic — its value is the metal. Year of our choice; condition brilliant uncirculated unless stated. Packaging: Individual capsule.

The American Platinum Eagle is the only platinum bullion coin issued by the United States Mint, and it carries the highest face value of any US bullion coin at $100.

Each coin holds one troy ounce of .9995 fine platinum. The obverse shows John Mercanti's Statue of Liberty portrait, and the bullion reverse an eagle in flight.

Platinum is far rarer than gold and its price is driven largely by industry, especially vehicle catalysts, so it moves differently from gold and silver. It is also a much thinner market: expect wider spreads, and expect to sell to a dealer rather than a private buyer.

Mintages are small compared with gold and silver Eagles. We ship the year we have in stock, in a capsule.

Questions

How is the price of the Platinum Eagle 1 oz calculated?

It contains 1 troy oz of fine platinum. At the current spot price of $1,587.95/oz that metal is worth $1,587.95; our premium for one unit is $127.04 (8.0%), paying by bank transfer. The price updates with spot until you lock it at checkout for 10 minutes.

Why is the card price higher?

Card networks charge us a fee on every card payment. Our list price is the card price; paying by bank transfer (ACH) or wire saves you 4%.

Is there a discount for buying more?

Yes — the per-unit price drops at 10 units. The table beside the price shows each break.

Can I spend it?

It is legal tender with a face value of $100 (USD), but the face value is symbolic. Its worth is its platinum content.

Why does platinum trade differently from gold?

Most platinum demand is industrial, so its price follows manufacturing more than it follows the safe-haven buying that moves gold.

Can I hold this in an IRA?

Generally eligible for a precious metals IRA, though your custodian has the final say on what it accepts.

How will it be shipped?

Fully insured, in plain packaging with no reference to what's inside, and a signature is required on delivery. Tracking is emailed when it ships.
